Essay in the English language have lost much of its prestige in our academic environment. Its main reason, indeed, lies in the performance of our composition classes in the school and college timetable. There was a time, many years ago, when essay-writing was one of the major concerns of the student in the intermediate classes. The student really discovered himself in his essays, and the English language helped him in looking at his composition as a mirror-image of his attainments. It is perhaps easier to see oneself in a foreign language than in the language which he speaks himself. The first language does not reveal yourself; it is the second language which tells you who you actually are. Nevertheless, over the years, essay-writing has gone out of fashion, as have the composition classes, in the college time-table, with the result that we seldom come across any anthology of essays in the English language as creative expression in our literary world. There is hardly any writer in our academic culture who has taken up the essay in English language as a medium of his literary expression, just as writing poetry or short stories has been taken up by writers as their mode of creative writing.
It is need of the hour that focus on essay writing should be prevailed. Publishers should have to encourage the writers to take part and excel in this field. Their contribution should be far more than to just helping persons to practice in essay writing with models for guidance. Economics, history, politics, culture and religion, privatization, foreign aid, devaluation, inflation etc. are the topic which should be covered extensively. It is work based on mature thinking of serious scholars and academicians of ideas who look upon our national scenario in its multiple aspects.
